Homer, July 1865."  Binding Very Good (extremities moderately bumped & worn); contents Good (lt.-to-moderate foxing, lt. tidemarks to lower gutters, & short closed tear to upper edge of pp.137-38).  McLean VPBB 53 (repr. in colour--"perhaps the most sensational of all the cut-out paper and gold blocking bindings"), Ray 239 ("thanks to Evans's brilliant coloring, the detailed engravings of flowers in this book are among Foster's best illustrations. [ca. mid-1870s]).  21 x 16.5cm (4to), in publisher's olive fine-ribbed cloth w/coloured floral decoration to fr. cover, gilt title to fr. cover & spine, bevelled edges, a.e.g., dark slate green ep.s, [192] cardstock pp. w/tissue-guarded frontis, prelim titlepage & numerous illus. engraved in colours by Edmund Evans after Foster.  Compared to the 1st issues, this one has different pagination (altho' w/the same nr. of leaves), decorative engraved headpieces for each chapter, & was printed in brighter colours.  Printed by Edmund Evans, London.  With the small blindstamp of W.H. Smith & Son to fr. ep.  Binding Good (extremitites moderately bumped & rubbed, spine darkened, remnants of label removal from fr. ep. & closed tear to rear ep., & hinges split); contents Fair (sellotape glue stains to inner margins of pp.[6] & [7], pp.111-12 & 145-46 lacking, & occas. lt. thumbing & foxing).  (Inv. #1157)  C$100
