Meredith,
George (1828-1909, British poet & novelist), AUTOGRAPH LETTER
SIGNED. ALS to James N. Dunn, written in blue ink on
watermarked "Original Turkey Mill Kent" stationery from Box Hill,
Dorking, dated October 2nd 1889, thanking the recipient for sending
"the paper with the article on me.... Let the writer be assured that my
dose of syrup & the lash is taken humbly." Two sides w/blank
integral leaf, approx. 60 words, signed "George Meredith."

Meredith's connections with the Pre-Raphaelites are
two-fold: in about 1855 he modelled for the figure in Henry Wallis's Chatterton
(Tate Gallery) & his wife Mary Ellen (daughter of Thomas Love
Peacock) soon left him for the young painter; and, by 1861 he was a
regular participant in D.G. Rossetti's social gatherings & in Oct.
1862 took a room in Rossetti's house at 16 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea.
