Two Autograph Letters Signed, by William Morris

Morris, William (1834-1896, British polymath), AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED.  ALS to William Grenley written on 20 x 16cm notepaper from Hart Street, Bloomsbury, dated May 16th [1876], advising him that "the quotation I think you will find is Gower's 'Vox Clamantis'--'Let my verse not be turgid, let there be in it no word of untruth; may each word answer to the thing it speaks of pleasantly and fully...'," signed "William Morris."  One side, approx. 85 words.  Neumeyer Hall in Hart Street, Bloomsbury was the site of meetings of the Social Democratic Federation, of which Morris was a member.  Provenance: Doheny Collection in 1984.  Very Good (moderately wrinkled & creased).  Kelvin I #329.  (Inv. #776)  C$1,600




Morris, William (1834-1896, British polymath), AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED.  Unpublished ALS to Sidney Colvin written on 26 Queen Square, Bloomsbury letterhead printed on watermarked "Kent" handmade paper, dated March 5th 1881, enclosing a one-guinea cheque (not present) in payment for some facsimilies ("I can scarce believe in the figure, 'tis so cheap"), signed "William Morris."  One side w/blank integral leaf, approx. 40 words.  Near-fine.  Not in Kelvin.  (Inv. #889)  C$1,600
