[1873]).  Unstated second US edition, 17.5 x 12cm (16mo), in publisher's dark green dotted-line cloth w/gilt & black decorations & title to fr. cover & spine (blind ruling & decorative device to rear), a.e.g., [i-v] vi-viii, [1] 2-378 pp. w/76 wood engravings by the Dalziels after Hughes.  Inscribed in ink to half-title: "Mrs. Fisk, for her children, with love from their cousin George MacDonald."  Binding Very Good (rebacked w/most of the original spine laid down & new head-&-tail bands & buff ep.s, & extremities sl. bumped & rubbed); contents Very Good (B1's edges a bit chipped, occas. lt. spotting, & moderate off-setting from the engravings).  Sadleir 1474c (incorrectly identified as the 1st US ed.).  (Inv. #752)  C$1,600

    Mrs. Elizabeth Ross (née Spence) Fiske was indeed a cousin of MacDonald's; in 1852 she married Lewis Ransom Fiske & by 1871 they had 2 children.  It would appear that MacDonald inscr. this copy for her during his Mar. 1873 lecture tour stop in Ann Arbor, Michigan (see Raeper, GMacD p.301).
