Nichols with the author's kind regards" (below which is inscr. in another hand: "To G.E.     This is the 1st of 3 vols. (the others were publ. in 1885 & 1889) of MacDonald's collected sermons, most of which were based on New Testament texts.  The recipient of this presentation copy, Mary Sergeant Gove Nichols (1810-1884), was the wife of Thomas Low Nichols & author of The Clothes Question Considered in its Relations to Beauty, Comfort, and Health (London: Privately printed, 1878).  Mary & her husband moved to England in 1861.
