pp. Printed by J.B. Hirschfeld, Leipzig. Inscribed to head
of titlepage: "Ethel Jane Reid with love & thanks from George
MacDonald" (Ethel Jane was likely related to Sir George Reid, who
painted MacDonald's portrait in 1868, or possibly to Elizabeth Jesser
Reid, founder of Bedford College for Women). Considering E.T.A.
Hoffmann's influence on this theological novel (see Wolff p.198), it is
appropriate that it was one of the 1st of MacDonald's books to be
translated into German. Binding Good (spine sl. darkened, a few
marks to covers, & extremities a bit bumped & worn); contents
Very Good (moderate foxing to prelims & final few leaves).
