William Michael Rossetti's Copy of Jérome Paturot

Dubouchet Le Chevalier et Cie., 1846).  First illustrated edition[?], French language text, 26.5 x 18cm (4to), in contemp. black morocco w/gilt ruling to covers & gilt decorations & title to spine, 5 raised bands, a.e.g., marbled ep.s, silk ribbon marker, 460 [viii] pp., +frontis & numerous full-page & in-text wood engravings after Grandville.  Printed by Typ. Schneider et Langrand, Paris.  Inscribed "W.M. Rossetti, 1871" & "To my dear Helen [Rossetti Angeli], Novr. 1903. This book was a great favourite with Gabriel [DGR] & me towards 1847" to verso of fr. ep.; also w/German language presentation dated 1846 to recto of 1st blank.  Binding Good- (fr. cover creased, extremities rather bumped & worn, & covers rubbed); contents Very Good (moderate foxing & stains to 1st & final few leaves w/infrequent lt. spotting elsewhere).  (Inv. #1298)  C$1,000

    Judging from the 1871 date inscr. by William, one could assume that this is not the same copy admired by him & his brother in their youth.  On the other hand, it is entirely possible that it's the same copy & he inscr. it at a later date.  An uncommon opportunity to own an item which influenced the youthful Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
