Rear cover
Allingham, William, THE MUSIC MASTER, A LOVE STORY. AND TWO SERIES OF DAY AND NIGHT SONGS (London: G. Routledge & Co., 1855).  First edition, first issue binding, 17 x 10.5cm (small 8vo), in publisher's olive vertically-ribbed cloth w/embossed borders to covers, gilt floral & lyre design & title to fr. cover, gilt title & design to spine (all designed by John Leighton w/his initials to fr. cover), central embossed device to rear cover, mustard ep.s, [i-vii] viii-ix [x-xi] xii-xiii [xiv-xvi], [1-3] 4-221 [222] pp. +frontis & 8 unpaginated full-page wood engraved plates by the Dalziels after Arthur Hughes, D.G. Rossetti & J.E. Millais, & numerous vignettes & ornaments after Hughes, & 2pp. publ. adverts to rear.  Printed by Savill & Edwards, London.  Inscribed to recto of fr. ep.: "Helen MacGregor, 1943."  In this 1st issue Hughes's Fairies appears as the frontis rather than his Crossing the Stile as in the later issues--see Lasner's discussion (p.28).  Tipped to rear pastedown is a clipping from old bookseller's catalogue describing it as a fine copy, but sadly this no longer applies as at some later point the book was stored in a garage resulting in moisture damage to the cloth & biopredation to the upper spine.  Binding Good (some spotting to cloth w/moderate loss to upper spine gilt & sl. loss to lower fr. cover's gilt design, & ep.s a bit dusty w/signs of removal of prev. owner's bookplate from fr. pastedown); contents Very Good (occas. lt.-to-moderate foxing).  Athenæum 15 Aug. 1855 p.943 (by H.F. Chorley), White passim, Rossetti 1 (p.41), Reid passim, Fredeman 46.4 & 90.2 (see also p.186), Colbeck 4 & 5 (later issues), Lasner 4 Binding Variant 1, de Beaumont 7, Goldman 6 (see also p.2), Woodman I.A.1 (see also passim).  (Inv. #1272)  C$1,500
