First Edition Presentation Copy of William Allingham's Irish Songs and Poems

Allingham, William, IRISH SONGS AND POEMS ... WITH NINE AIRS HARMONIZED FOR VOICE AND PIANOFORTE (London: Reeves & Turner, 1887).  First edition, first issue, 17.5 x 11cm (8vo), in publisher's forest green fine rib-grain cloth w/embossed central device to fr. cover, embossed borders to covers, gilt title to spine, a.e. untrimmed, marbled ep.s, [i-v] vi, [1] 2-164 pp.  Printed by Billing & Sons, Guildford.  Inscribed to head of half-title: "To Margaret Jameson from W. Allingham" & w/his holograph correction to p.105 (the recipient was likely the illustrator of the ca.1910 ed. of Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield).  In Nov. 1887 Allingham noted in his diary: "trying to get Irish Songs, etc. out. Binding not right, mistake in printing..." (WA: A Diary 1907, p.366)--the "not right" comment may refer to the marbled ep.s, highly unusual in a publisher's cloth binding; & the "mistake" is likely the repeat of the word "wondrous" on p.105.  Binding Very Good (extremities sl. bumped & rubbed, & fore-edges of covers sl. discoloured); contents Good (most leaves a bit browned, & old glue stains to gutters of pp.48-49, 64-65, 112-13 & 128-29).  Fredeman 46.13, Colbeck 30 (the 1890 2nd issue), Lasner 25.  (Inv. #1181)  C$1,000
