Barrett, Elizabeth Barrett (later Mrs. Elizabeth Barrett Browning), POEMS (London: Edward Moxon, 1844).  Two volumes, first editions, second states, 17 x 10.5cm (16mos), bound by Riviere & Son (stamped in gilt to lower fr. turn-ins) in full russet morocco w/gilt titles & 5 raised bands to spines, t.e.g. (others untrimmed), ornate ½" gilt dentelles, grey & white swirled ep.s, [i-iii] iv-xvi, [1-3] 4-250; & [iii] iv, [1-3] 4-275 [276] pp. +1p. publ. advert to rear of Vol. I.  The original green fine rib-grain cloth covers (each w/embossed decorations) & gilt-titled spines are all included in the rear of each binding.  Printed by Bradbury & Evans, London.  Upon reading these poems Robert Browning wrote to the author & expressed his glowing admiration, an event which initiated one of literature's most remarkable love stories.  Bindings Very Good (extremities moderately worn, fr. joints & hinges cracked, & tidemarks to Vol. II's covers w/some wear to upper edge of rear); contents Near-Fine (lt. toning to outer margins).  Slater p.45, Ashley I 94-95, Ehrsam & Deily 53-54, Colbeck 6.  (Inv. #1169)  C$1,400
